European AIS DatabaseRequirements Capture

A precise identification of what the revised system shall implement. A fundamental exercise that will drive many of the later tasks.

Before undertaking any system development or modification, it is essential that you know what you are aiming to achieve. What will be its prime objectives? Are there any constraints on the design? What system performance is required?

Through requirements capture the answers to these, and many more, questions will be answered and recorded such that the development and testing may proceed.

Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions is able to offer staff skilled in the identification and capture of user and system requirements. They are available to ensure that the system is well specified such that it will meet its needs - avoiding the cost of expensive rework later.

Database to AIXM Mapping

How does your database map to EUROCONTROL’s AIXM? A detailed mapping between the two is an essential task.

In order for your system to communicate to EAD, the EAD System Interface (ESI) will be used. This provides a means of sharing information between the two systems.

The underlying means used to share information is a technology called XML (Extensible Mark-up language) which enables data to be passed between the two systems.

Before information may be passed to EAD, or messages received from EAD stored in a database locally, the data must be translated from a local structure into an XML format. This will require an analysis of your local database to be carried out against EUROCONTROL's AIXM.

Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions assisted in the development of the AIXM and has worked using XML extensively. We are therefore ideally placed to assist in this potentially complex task.

Migration and Transition

Planning how your organisation will move from its current situation to use of EAD whilst maintaining an acceptable level of service.

As part of an organisation's planning to migrate to EAD use, a Migration and Transition Plan is required by EUROCONTROL. This outlines, for example, why the organisation is migrating, how its infrastructure/system will be modified to suit and the timeframe of migration.

Whilst this provides basic information, an organisation may wish to undertake a far more detailed plan to ensure a smooth transition that ensures service is never lost.

Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions has worked closely with EUROCONTROL for migration and transition planning and are ideally suited to work with your organisation.

Security

Establishing how the security of the system will be maintained by protecting against malicious intervention from both within and beyond the organisation.

What are the implications for your organisation of being connected to the EAD? What is the implication for EAD of you being connected to them?

Both your organisation and EAD will wish to see evidence that adequate security measures have been taken.

Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions has many years experience preparing security policies and is aware of the issues that may affect the safe operation of a live, operationally significant system.

Network Planning

Identification of how the components that constitute the system are connected and what infrastructure is required to support it.

Your organisation may well already have an existing network that you may wish to have connected to the EAD. This may offer advantages as the amount of new infrastructure required might be reduced, but how do you ensure that the needs of your organisation and those of EAD are met?

Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions has staff with experience of planning networks - both for small and large configurations. We can ensure that your organisation's needs are met whilst taking into account the reuse of the existing equipment, security issues imposed by both your organisation and the EAD and likely future expansion.

Safety Case

An assessment of a system in order to prove its suitability for operational use. Identifies areas that may require special attention during project implementation.

The ever increasing drive for safety in aviation means that before any new system can be introduced in Europe it has to be proven to be safe. EADS is no exception. Implementing EADS will fundamentally change the way AIS is handled within each State's aviation organisations and as such its introduction should be covered by an appropriate Safety Case. Lockheed Martin UK - Integrated Systems & Solutions has considerable experience of developing aviation Safety Cases, why not contact us and let us help you introduce EADS safely.
